Geometry
Grades: Students entering Grades 8-10
Course Description: Geometry is a full year course that explores the basic elements of Euclidean Geometry. The course primarily employs deductive methods of reasoning to study basic two and three-dimensional shapes and their properties. This course also aims to reinforce algebraic concepts, with a particular emphasis on the connections between math and science. Topics include points, lines, planes, angles, properties of parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, similarity, right triangles, circles, and applications to area and volume. Using theorems, postulates, and definitions, students use logical reasoning skills to prove relationships between lines, angles, and basic geometric shapes. Throughout the year real-world applications of both plane and solid Geometry are stressed. No textbook is required and all materials will be provided in class.
Prerequisite: Algebra 1 or Algebra 1B and department approval. Upon registration, students will be sent an approval form they will need to fill out and have signed by their current math teacher.
