Description

Hybrid Geometry

Grades: Students entering Grades 8-10

Course Description: Geometry is a full-year course that explores the basic elements of Euclidean Geometry. The course primarily employs deductive methods of reasoning to study basic two and three-dimensional shapes and their properties. This course also aims to reinforce algebraic concepts, with a particular emphasis on the connections between math and science. Topics include points, lines, planes, angles, properties of parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, similarity, right triangles, circles, and applications to area and volume. Using theorems, postulates, and definitions, students use logical reasoning skills to prove relationships between lines, angles, and basic geometric shapes. Throughout the course, real-world applications of both plane and solid Geometry are stressed. No textbook is required and all materials will be provided as part of the class.

Students will complete this hybrid course online through mySMES where learning is accomplished asynchronously on a self-paced, flexible schedule. Students will have access to a library of video lessons, problem sets, and review packets created by the St. Margaret’s math department.

  • Info Session: Students must attend an on-campus course kick-off information session the week of June 2nd.

  • Remote Check-ins: Students must also attend mandatory remote check-ins on a regular basis with their teacher who will oversee their progress through the course and provide additional support.

  • Self-Paced with Benchmarks: Students work at their own pace but must complete specific chapters by the following dates.

    • Complete all work and assessments through Chapter 2  by Friday, June 27nd

    • Complete all work and assessments through Chapter 6 by Friday, July 11th

    • Finish the course and take the final exam by Friday, August 1st

  • Flexible In-Person Testing: There are a total of 11 chapter tests and 1 final exam. All tests must be taken on campus during regularly scheduled weekly testing opportunities. Students are not required to test every week but must complete chapter tests by the designated benchmark dates. Students may take multiple chapter tests on the same day if they choose.

Please contact SMES Extension Programs or math department chair, Elizabeth O’Shea, if you would like more details about summer Hybrid Geometry. Please note, this course is not a good option for students who plan to be away from campus for the entire summer.

Prerequisite: Algebra 1 or Algebra 1B and department approval. Upon registration, students will be sent an approval form they will need to fill out and have signed by their current math teacher.
